What’s In YOUR … Edible?

The now famous line, “What’s in your wallet?” can certainly apply to the cannabis industry. But before we try to figure out what’s in your edible, we need to figure out what’s in your cannabis. Below is a summary of foreign compounds found in cannabis, and the reasoning behind why certain manufacturers are truly unable to quantify the exact dosage and purity in their respective edibles.

Cyanide, Anyone? As per Steep Hill, a laboratory testing entity, over 80% of the cannabis tested at their Berkley lab was contaminated, and most likely will not pass the State of California testing requirements beginning January 1st, 2018. The reason? The amount of harmful, toxic chemicals that have been used for years to ‘help’ grow a ‘healthy’ harvest. Myclobutanil, Trifloxystrobin, Paclobutrazol, Bifenazate, and Bifenthrin are some of the more common chemicals used for growing, with Myclobutanil being the leader. In fact, according to various reports, up to 66% of cannabis grown in California contains Myclobutanil. So, what is Myclobutanil?

Myclobutanil is the active ingredient in several brands of pesticides including Eagle 20EW. As a systemic chemical, Myclobutanil cannot be removed by washing treated crops. The final remaining residual levels before harvesting may vary greatly, and will depend on many factors, including the last application before harvest. The bottom line is that, more likely than not, if Myclobutanil was applied during the growing process, then you’re going to consume some Myclobutanil. And, consuming any of it means you’re consuming Hydrogen Cyanide. In short, Myclobutanil is stable at room temperature, but releases highly toxic gases if heated past its boiling point of 205 degrees C. Disposable butane lighters used to ignite cannabis produce temperatures in excess of 450 degrees C. The result? Release of Hydrogen Cyanide – one of the most toxic, harmful and deadly compounds known to mankind. In fact, Hydrogen Cyanide is a Schedule 3 toxic chemical under the Chemicals Weapon Convention when heat is applied. For example, when you light up your cannabis.

“Dosage is everything” – Paracelsus. Philippus Aureolus (a/k/a Paracelsus), the great German-Swiss physician and alchemist who established the role of chemistry in medicine in the late 15th century, had it right. Dosage is everything. For example, you have an mmj brownie or cookie similar to last night, but 30 minutes later you’re not feeling a thing. Nothing. Or worse, the unexpected amount of THC hitting your system causes you to hunt for the nearest couch or bed. The culprit? The inability of an edible’s manufacturer to accurately and consistently quantify the precise amount of active cannabis ingredients in each cookie. Variables in the manufacturing process include, but are not limited, to the quality of the plant, the reaction of the plant’s natural and foreign chemicals when heated, combining the plant with other ingredients, and the external environment (air temperature, humidity), as well as the biphasic effect. Cannabis compounds have biphasic properties, which means that low and high dosages of the same substance can produce opposite effects. Combining the various factors together means it’s extremely difficult during the manufacturing process to constantly and consistently create an equal dosage of a specific cannabis compound in edibles on a regular basis. This problem is exacerbated when scaling the product to meet consumer demands.

Consistent Dosage Exists. CannaStrips™ are not edibles.
