What is Brownweed?

Brownweed, or “brown weed,” is a term used to describe low-quality marijuana that has at least some THC—the chemical in cannabis which is responsible for getting people high. It is usually referred to as “brown” because it’s typically not as potent or fragrant, and also has a lower price point. It can still produce significant effects, but at a lower price and quality. The term brownweed also describes marijuana that tastes like oregano or smells like soap.

Brownweed is often found in dispensaries and at many marijuana shops that are going through inventory from their harvest last fall or winter period. And, it’s not uncommon for it to be mixed with the higher quality strains of cannabis instead of being sold separately on its own. This makes sense given some people may be hesitant about purchasing low-quality weed when they know they’re getting more expensive strains mixed in.

Of course, brownweed is not something that cannabis experts or enthusiasts would be excited to see on a menu. It’s considered low-quality and is often associated with newer users or people who are just beginning to try the drug. For this reason, it can be hard to find brownweed being sold as its own product in most dispensaries. But if you do see it, you’ll likely notice that the price point is significantly lower than other products.

The potency of brownweed varies from product to product and batch to batch depending on what the grower intended. When it has THC, you can expect to feel the effects, but perhaps not as strongly as you would with a premium strain. Regardless of your tolerance level, if you take a few hits from a blunt and don’t feel anything or take an edible and end up with a stomachache afterward, it’s very likely that what you’re trying is brownweed.
