Washington D.C. Votes Overwhelmingly to Legalize Cannabis

Washington D.C. is poised to join Colorado and Washington State in legalizing adult-use marijuana after backing Initiative 71 at the voting booths. With voters backing the bill 7-to-3, the initiative will permit anyone over the age of 21 to legally possess as much as two ounces of marijuana and to grow up to three marijuana plants at home, unless the next Congress takes action to block it.
The district has faced a number of challenges with its marijuana policies over the past several years. For instance, 88% of those convicted of marijuana possession in the nation’s capitol were black, despite surveys showing that whites and blacks are equally likely to use the drug. The district’s arrest rate for marijuana was also higher than any of the 50 states and ranked 7th nationally among counties.
Many marijuana advocates are hoping that the efforts to bring legalization to the doorstep of the nation’s leadership will help effect change everywhere. With cannabis still illegal on a federal level, the industry has faced a lot of challenges with issues like legalized banking access. These issues have led to increased crime rates and a host of other problems that could be avoided with a federal legalization.
The alternative scenario is that Washington D.C. remains largely the same without the proliferation of shops seen in cities like Denver, Colorado. Congress could also react negatively, which is what they did back in 1998 after voters passed a measure allowing medical marijuana dispensaries. At that time, Republicans used amendments to federal budget bills for 11 years to keep from enacting the law.
In the end, the move at least shows the growing and robust support for legalized marijuana in the United States. The legalization of adult-use marijuana in the nation’s capitol could also be instrumental in helping pave the way for federal legalization of the substance.
