Texans Look to Legalize Marijuana

Rep. David Simpson, a Republican from Longview, introduced House Bill 2165 to put an end to Texas’ century-long prohibition of marijuana. Unlike many such bills across the U.S., the legislator believes that marijuana should be regulated in the same manner as tomatoes, jalapenos, and other popular Texas vegetables – a far less stringent treatment than regulating it like tobacco or alcohol.
“I don’t believe that when God made marijuana he made a mistake that government needs to fix,” he said in a Texas Tribute editorial published soon after the bill was filed.
The piece of legislation joins roughly a dozen others pending in Texas Legislature that would either legalize the medical use of cannabis or reduce the penalties for possession of the drug. Supporters believe that these laws could save nearly a quarter of a billion dollars by ending marijuana prosecutions, while reducing organized crime and violence associated with trafficking the drug.
Opponents argue that any tolerance of the drug could lead to the moral and physical decay of the state’s population. With a staunchly religious and conservative base, the state could have a tough time convincing voters to support more liberal policies. Many also argue that prescriptions are far too easy to obtain, even if the drug is helpful in treating pain and nausea, among other things.
The Texas Legislature is unlikely to legalize marijuana during this session, but the sheer number of bills on the table, supported by both Republicans and Democrats, suggest that legalization may not be that far off into the future.
