PODA: The Evolution of Smoking

News, Top Story

By now we all know that smoking tobacco is bad for your health. After years of famously covering up the science proving this fact, even the tobacco industry has come around on the issue. Philip Morris, the world’s largest tobacco company, now touts a ‘vision of a smoke-free future’ and has introduced heat-not-burn (HNB) products to eventually replace traditional cigarettes. It turns out that many of the negative health effects associated with cigarette use are likely caused by the combustion process more so than by the tobacco itself.

PODA Holdings, Inc. (CSE: PODA) (FSE: 99L) (OTC: PODAF) was founded in 2015 to develop and commercialize reduced-risk smoking products. Poda’s patented Beyond Burn™ Poda Pods serve two types of tobacco consumers: those who want to quit smoking, and those who want to continue ‘smoking’ while reducing the health risks. But the system is not limited to tobacco users by any means, as the pods can be used for other materials including medicinal herbs, cannabis, and CBD.

PODA CEO Ryan Selby discusses the company’s target markets.

How Poda Works

Poda’s system consists of two pieces: the Beyond Burn™ Poda Device, and the Beyond Burn™ Poda Pods. The device is rechargeable, simple to use, and offers three temperature settings to work with a variety of substrates. The heat levels are designed to release active ingredients from the material without actually burning it. The pods are currently offered with a specialized blend of tea leaves and synthetic nicotine in a variety of flavors. The company, now in the early stages of commercialization, plans on greatly expanding both the flavor and substrate choices in the coming quarters.

Poda Pods can be completely biodegradable, a feature that ties in nicely with the company’s commitment to Environment, Social, and Governance principles. The system also eliminates any need for cleaning by the user, offering unparalleled ease of use without the harmful waste and pollution often associated with disposable items. Unlike many other HNB products on the market, there is no residual odor or residue with the Poda Pods.

The pods are designed to look and feel like cigarettes, closely mimicking the smoking experience without the smoke, smell, or tobacco. This feature makes Poda a great tool for helping people quit smoking or replace their traditional habit with one that is likely to be healthier. People who attempt to quit smoking often fail for a few reasons. First, nicotine is addictive. It’s just plain hard to quit an addictive substance. But it goes deeper than that, as the act of smoking can become an ingrained habit that is tied to other triggers. There can be an oral fixation element, and even an emotional dependence on smoking. Poda’s system addresses all of these issues and may increase the chance of success.

The Tobacco Opportunity, and Beyond

The global tobacco market is around $800 billion annually, with about 1.3 billion smokers across the globe. The reality of the market is that it is large, but not a real growth opportunity without some changes. In the face of widely-known negative health effects, rising taxes, and increasingly strict regulations, the industry is almost forced to adapt. Hence the efforts of Philip Morris to switch to a smoke-free mode, spearheaded by its own HNB line of products called IQOS. The company sold about 85 billion HNB tobacco sticks in 2020, is on track to sell about 100 billion sticks in 2021, and has captured about 20% of the Japanese tobacco market. There is clearly a lot of business to be had here, and the market would seem ripe for product innovation in these early stages.

Poda is just getting started selling its products after years of development. The company recently announced the shipment of a bulk order of 500,000 units to a customer intending to sell them in key Asian and European markets. Poda currently utilizes a pilot production facility capable of manufacturing 400,000 Poda Pods each month and is in the process of building out capacity that would allow for the production of 10 million units per month.

While the initial focus is on the tobacco market, Poda sees plenty of opportunity in other markets due to the substrate-agnostic nature of its patented technology. The cannabis industry, quickly finding its legs across the globe, would seem a natural fit for Poda’s system. In the coming quarters, look for product innovation, expanded production capacity, and sales growth as potential drivers for the company. Stay tuned.
