Physicians Support Cannabis for Epilepsy Treatment

Medical marijuana has been growing in popularity among patients, but many physicians still have doubts about its efficacy.

Epilepsy has become the poster child in many ways for the medical marijuana movement, with many anecdotal stories of success, particularly in cases of severe childhood epilepsy. These initial successes have sparked companies like GW Pharmaceuticals plc [stockquote symbol=GWPH] to pursue the development of Epidiolex® and GWP42006 for the treatment of epilepsy. Data from these trials has helped validate the drug’s safety and efficacy over time.

A new study published in Epilepsia found that most general physicians and nurses now support the use of medical marijuana for the treatment of epilepsy, although epileptologists and neurologists aren’t quite as optimistic. After surveying 776 participants across North America and Europe, the report found that slightly fewer than half (48%) of epilepsy specialists and neurologists would advise in favor of using medical marijuana in severe cases of epilepsy while about 85% of general physicians and nurses would recommend such a therapy.

While fewer specialists support the treatment option than general practitioners, numerous states have enacted or amended laws enabling doctors to recommend either the use of cannabis or extracts for various forms of treatment-resistant epilepsy. Research has shown that these compounds mitigate seizure activity in children with treatment-resistant forms of the disease, while controlled clinical trials continue to make progress in proving these claims over time.

The progress made in the epilepsy field could also further validate research being conducted in other areas, such as pain management or arthritis. Many companies are working on pre-clinical and/or clinical trials in these areas, which could produce some exciting results over the coming years.
