New York Times Begins Running Full-Page Cannabis Ads

Shortly after the New York Times published an Op-Ed piece pushing for the national legalization of cannabis, the iconic newspaper published its first full-page for-profit marijuana advertisement. Leafy, a website and app that provides medical marijuana dispensary reviews and locations, took out the advertisement at a cost of around $180,000, according to the Times open rate for full page ads.
“While we have run ads from marijuana advocacy organizations in the past, such as NORML [the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws], this may be the first non-advocacy ad that has been run,” said a New York Times representative to AdWeek when asking about the situation. “But since we do not track advertisements by subject, we can’t definitely confirm this claim.”
The move represents another step in normalizing medical and recreational marijuana in the eyes of the public. According to a recent CBS poll, 51% of those surveyed believe that marijuana should be fully legalized, which represents a dramatic change from the past. In October 2011, a similar poll found that 51% of U.S. citizens opposed the legalization of marijuana.
Support for the legalization of marijuana has been especially strong among those under the age of 44, while most U.S. citizens between 45 and 64 think marijuana should be legal. The only age group that still opposes the legalization of marijuana is seniors that are aged 65 or older. Pro-legalization respondents also tend to be men, democrats, and wealthy, according to the same CBS poll.
Medical marijuana has also achieved unparalleled support among both the public and medical professionals. Some 86% of respondents believe that doctors should be allowed to prescribe small amounts of marijuana for patients suffering from serious illness, which is up from 62% when a 1997 CBS survey asked the same question. Many states have agreed in recent quarters with extensive legalization efforts.
