NECANN’s 5th Annual Boston Expo Brings Together New England’s Cannabis Best and Brightest
March 24th, 2019
The legal cannabis in Massachusetts is in full swing. At the recent New England Cannabis Conference (NECANN) in Boston, thousands of eager cannabis entrepreneurs, cultivators, thought leaders, and investors joined together to learn, network, conduct deal flow – and of course, have a great time. The 2019 event, now in its 5th year, coincided with the grand opening of the first adult-use dispensary within the city, bringing an extra wave of celebration to the organization’s flagship expo.
Considered the largest East Coast cannabis industry conference, NECANN recently expanded to include satellite events in other cities across the region. However, their show in Boston continues to be their largest draw.
“I’ve watched this show grow from a gym to the Hynes Convention Center, and I hear they have to move to an even bigger spot next year,” remarked Taylor Jones of TILT Holdings, a presenting sponsor and exhibitor. “I think Massachusetts in general is such an explosive market, it’s moving a little bit slow right now as far as recreational licenses, but it’s just exciting in general for the east coast to start to see recreational cannabis. You’re going to see states like New Jersey, New York, they’re right behind them, and the whole East Coast is going to be recreational here before too long.”
Shanel Lindsay has also been involved with NECANN since the early days and was impressed by the massive growth the show has experienced. The entrepreneur and founder of Ardent was a panelist on the popular tech in cannabis presentation and found herself in the parked “consumption bus” outside immediately after.
“I’m really excited to be talking about technology and how Massachusetts can be a leader in advancing cannabis technology,” she remarked. “It’s exciting to be part of that and then, be able to engage in experiences like this now in Boston where we could be on a bus, in a private bus and smoking and hanging out just like we would in a beer garden.”
Other well attended panels included discussions on mergers and acquisitions, the rise of multi-state operators, and public consumption. Keynote Speaker Niambe McIntosh, a criminal reform advocate and daughter of the late reggae legend Peter Tosh, urged the crowd to keep social justice in the forefront of their minds as the multi billion dollar cannabis industry continues to thrive.
Up next for NECANN is the 2nd Annual Vermont Hemp & Cannabis Convention, which is expected to draw several thousand attendees. The state recently legalized adult-use marijuana through their state legislature, the first in the nation to do so.
