Massachusetts is in the Crosshairs for Cannabis Reform

The successful legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington has emboldened advocates in many other states to pursue similar measures. After legalizing possession of small amounts of the drug in 2008, cannabis advocates are now pursuing full legalization in Massachusetts in 2016.
When legalizing small possession and medical use of cannabis in 2012, more than 60% of Massachusetts voters approved of the measures. The move to pursue these measures in a Presidential election year increases turnout among younger voters that tend to support these measures more than the elderly.
Outside groups have also begun to pledge strategic and financial support to push for legalization in the state. For instance, the Marijuana Policy Project spent approximately $2 million in Colorado and indicated that it would support measures to legalize marijuana in Massachusetts, too.
The success of failure of recreational legalization efforts in Colorado and Washington between now and the 2016 elections will have a dramatic impact on the likelihood of the measures to pass. So far, no major incidents have been reported in Colorado despite record numbers lining up to buy legal pot.
Of course, marijuana also remains an illegal drug under federal laws, although the Department of Justice issued guidance last year that took a hands-off approach on prosecuting marijuana cultivation, distribution and possession in states where the activities were legal and regulated under state law.
