Maryland’s First MMJ Clinic Opens for Business

Maryland’s first medical marijuana clinic opened in Annapolis last month and has already seen more than 100 prospective patients, despite the fact that the program isn’t expected to be operational for another year, according to The Frederick News-Post.

The clinic, Greenway Consultation, is staffed with three physicians and three consultants, who aren’t registered to recommend the drug through the state quite yet. By opening the doors early, the clinics founders are looking to build patient-doctor relationships to expedite a recommendation for marijuana when the state’s program goes into effect.

The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission develops and oversees all licensing, registration, inspection, and testing, and has yet to officially adopt the cannabis program regulations that were under public comment until July 27th. The organization anticipates doctor and patient registries through the state to begin in December or January.

Some regulators are concerned that a medical marijuana clinic has begun charging for a program that has not yet been implemented, although the clinic has made it clear that they are simply providing accurate information about medical cannabis. In fact, the business plans on holding monthly meetings with dispensaries, growers, hydroponic shops, and head shops providing speaking and educational engagements and demonstrations.

The commission believes that medical cannabis could become available in the second half of 2016 and will begin accepting applications for growers, processors, and dispensaries in mid-October to November of this year. According to the regulators, there is no need to pay any person or organization any fee other than the physician fee for the doctor’s visit.
