Why Marijuana Could Be Center-Stage in 2020 Elections

The majority of the United States has some type of marijuana law in 2017. Eight states, plus DC have adult use recreational marijuana, twenty nine states, and DC, have full plant medical cannabis and much of the South has some form of low THC/CBD program.

With such a large swath of the US embracing marijuana reform and polls showing support for marijuana legalization higher than ever, some in Government have begun to take notice. This is manifested on both the state and Federal level.  State after state are passing recreational marijuana laws and some big Democratic and Republican contenders for the Presidency in 2020 have stepped forward to be some of marijuana’s biggest supporters. Toss in President Trump’s full throated endorsement of medical marijuana on Bill O’Riely’s show in 2016, contrasted by his Attorney General Jeff Sessions attempted revival of the war on marijuana and marijuana is shaping up to be on the center stage in the 2020 election.

Federal Level Support

On the Federal level, some Presidential heavy hitters have recently introduced marijuana legislation in the US Senate.

Rand Paul (R KYy), joined Democrats Cory Booker (D NJ) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D NY) to introduce the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States Act, also known as the CARERS Act. This first of its kind act would ask states to expand medical marijuana, allow importation of CBD across state lines, expand medical marijuana access to Veterans and facilitate more medical marijuana research.  Rand Paul, a long time marijuana reform advocate and two time Presidential candidate, brings a Republican libertarian base to the marijuana debate on the grounds of personal freedom and states’ rights.  Additionally, behind Colorado, his home state of Kentucky is the second largest hemp producer in the country.

Kirsten Gillibrand, another rumored 2020 Democratic contender, has fought for Veteran’s access in the US Senate and has spoke out for the need for Federal marijuana reform.

Recently, already assigned to the CARERS Act and possible Presidential race participant, Cory Booker introduced the Marijuana Justice Act in the US Senate, pushing marijuana even further into the presidential spotlight. Another first of its kind bill, The MJA will legalize marijuana in all fifty states, expunge Federal marijuana convictions, set up a process for those imprisoned to ask judges for lesser sentences, give incentives to states to legalize marijuana and set up a fund to rebuild communities affected by the war on marijuana.

A prominent Presidential hopeful, Senator Elizabeth Warren, whose state Massachusetts passed legal marijuana in 2016, has lobbied Congress for marijuana banking reform.  Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington State which joined Colorado in 2012 legalizing recreational marijuana, is rumored to be considering a presidential run.  Governor Inslee has over seen the implementation of legal marijuana in his state, and spoken out against Jeff Sessions attack on marijuana.

State Level Support

Focusing now on the state level, some of the most sought after Electoral College votes are in states with legal marijuana. States with legal marijuana hold one-hundred and ten electoral votes in the Electoral College.

California, whose voters just passed legal marijuana in 2016, and who’s Lieutenant Governor, Gavin Newsom, was one of the first Democrats to come out for legal marijuana, has a whopping fifty-five electoral votes. Colorado shaped up to be a battleground state in the past two elections. Florida, a long time battleground state, passed medical marijuana in the 2016 election, and will most likely have a legal marijuana initiative on the ballot in 2020. Add Arizona and other states like New Jersey and Ohio likely having legal marijuana initiatives on the ballot and marijuana is sure to be in the front of voter’s minds in November 2020 at the state level as well.
