Israel Could Serve as Medical Cannabis Role Model

The United States government continues to classify cannabis as a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance along the same lines as heroin and cocaine. Despite the tough stance, it has allowed the drug to be legalized for medical – and even recreational – use in many U.S. states. These conflicting laws have made it very difficult for the cannabis industry to flourish in one of the world’s leading nations.

Israel has proven to be a better role model when it comes to realizing the medical benefits of cannabis while still avoiding its negative implications. While cannabis remains classified as dangerous and illegal, the country’s government permits the use of medical cannabis with a license from an approved physician. The country’s medical use laws have been established since 1995 and are no longer controversial.

During its first decade, Israel’s medical cannabis program issued only 62 prescriptions as regulators cautiously rolled out the plan. Approximately 9,000 medical cannabis prescriptions now exist throughout the country as of December 2012 and that number is growing. The goal is to help patients in need without much red tape when there are no other viable options at an affordable price.

Israel has also created some of the world’s leading medical cannabis research and commercial entities. For instance, BreedIT Corp. [stockquote symbol=”BRDT”] provides programs designed to help breeders cultivate seeds and plants containing optimized levels of CBD versus THC contents. The goal is to create cannabis strains that are high in efficacious CBDs and low in psyhoactive THCs.

Reports from a MOH study found that 40,000 Israelis could benefit from medical cannabis, given its increasingly broad applications across medicine. Licenses are now available for conditions like asthma, AIDS wasting syndrome, vomiting/pain associated with chemotherapy, and other applications on a case-by-case basis, including many different orphan diseases with few pharmaceutical drug options.

In the end, countries considering the legalization of medical cannabis may want to consider policies more closely aligned to Israel than the United States.
