Approximately 45 days ago, Intelligent Highway Solutions Inc. [stockquote symbol=”IHSI”] announced its plans to expand into the burgeoning medical marijuana industry. At first glance it would appear as though IHSI is just another company haphazardly entering the market with the hopes of benefiting from the tremendous growth taking place. A closer look, however, will show that this isn’t at all the case.

The company is ideally positioned to grow very quickly in the cannabis space by targeting an overlooked but crucial market segment with the introduction of a superior growth lighting technology. To fully understand the company’s competitive advantages and growth potential, one must review the management team’s background, historical press releases, and key business relationships already in place.

Aside from business management and financing expertise, the core competence of IHSI’s executives stems from an extensive electrical background. Devon Jones, Chief Executive Officer, started in the construction and electrical industries nearly twenty years ago. In addition to hiring teams of engineers and controlling daily operations, which included cash flow management and negotiating new contracts, Jones performed and created sales and marketing strategies, obtained various electrical service certifications, and designed complex technology solutions. Philip Kirkland, Chairman and Chief Financial Officer, has accumulated nearly two decades of experience as well in the industry and has valuable relationships with individuals at global companies such as Siemens AG [stockquote symbol=”SIEGY”], Honeywell International Inc. [stockquote symbol=”HON”], and Trane. Duties over the years included managing projections of accounts receivable and payable, handling all accounting-related responsibilities, processing payroll, preparing bids, and supervising human resource issues. David Singer, President and Chief Technology Officer, has over 40 years of experience in corporate management of sales, marketing, project management, acquisitions and equity funding. His background includes founding an AMEX-listed company focused on wireless and sensor technology, developing McDonald’s Corp. [stockquote symbol=”MCD”] in-store systems monitoring, wireless data acquisition for a fleet of vehicles at The Walt Disney’s Company [stockquote symbol=”DIS”], and project management/engineering electrical installation for General Motors Company [stockquote symbol=”GM”], Ford Motor Company [stockquote symbol=”F”] and Chrysler Corporation.

In August, the company’s management team procured a master distributor agreement with SCS Lighting Solutions, an engineering and electronics company that specializes in solid state diode (SSD) lighting solutions for commercial customers. As part of the agreement, IHSI was given exclusive distribution rights in Sacramento, CA, which was later expanded to certain states and Canada. Thomas Dearmin, President and CEO of SCS Lighting, publicly noted IHSI’s leading position in the transportation market and its “excellent working relationships” with both local and state governments, which certainly played a big role in securing exclusive distribution rights.

The initial focus of the business relationship was to offer municipalities a highly efficient, long-lasting lighting solution that could save hundreds of thousands of dollars every year in energy and maintenance costs. However, as stated by CEO Devon Jones the day of the news release, SCS Lighting is capable of custom designing and building lighting solutions for specific requirements. When the new business opportunity arrived to provide a low cost, energy efficient lighting technology for accelerating the growth of cannabis plants, IHSI already had the expertise and infrastructure needed to create a superior light for this specific purpose.

Metal halide and sodium HID lamps lighting fixtures are widely used in the medical marijuana industry today. Compared to these fixtures, IHSI’s custom lighting solution uses approximately 85% less power and provides more than 400% of the required energy in the proper wavelengths for photosynthesis versus HID lamps. It should be noted that such a large boost of energy efficiency in a light also means far less energy is dispelled as heat. When you have as many as 1,800 lights in a 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse, the savings in cooling costs can be a very significant addition to the cost savings already gained from using lighting fixtures that draw less power.

Currently estimated to generate annual sales of $1.5 billion in the U.S. alone, the medical marijuana industry is one of the fastest growing markets in the world today with companies like GW Pharmaceuticals plc [stockquote symbol=”GWPH”] and Medbox, Inc. [stockquote symbol=”MDBX”] making significant investments in the space. As with any other plant, the growth of cannabis depends heavily on lighting conditions. Lighting technology that can dramatically increase yields with the optimal spectrum of wave lengths, while significantly lowering operating expenses, represents a very large growth opportunity.

But, even without this new business division, IHSI stands to do very well with its activities in the transportation, commercial lighting and infrastructure markets. Just recently the company announced a significant purchase order from Honeywell International [stockquote symbol=”HON”] for the installation of a temperature control system and associated sensors. Combined with three other orders expected from the Fortune 100 Company before the end of this year, the new business will represent about $1 million in revenues. IHSI is far ahead of schedule to complete the first purchase order and management believes the company is perfectly positioned to receive similar orders in the future.

IHSI also has a wireless transportation detection system under development that can be embedded into the road to measure traffic flow rate, speed and approximate vehicle weight. The wireless sensors comprising the system are extremely energy efficient and can actually generate the power needed to run entirely from the vibrations that occur from vehicle traffic. Improving traffic flow, reducing vehicle emissions, and optimizing traffic signals are just a few of the benefits offered by IHSI’s wireless detection system. It’s just another example of the innovative solutions being introduced by the company.

With industry-leading technology and key connections in place to drive future growth, IHSI is a well-diversified company that should be closely monitored. The company clearly has a knack for identifying quintessential opportunities and has a team in place with proven ability to win contracts from some of the world’s largest companies.
