Canada is mere weeks away from becoming the first G-7 nation to fully legalize the sale of adult-use cannabis and at the epicenter of this booming business is the Grow Up Conference and Expo in Niagara Falls, Ontario. With dozens of engaging panels, speakers, and networking lunches, this annual gathering of industry entrepreneurs and thought leaders covered topics such as cultivation, compliance, branding, and healthcare.

“Canada can own [the market],” keynote speaker and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary told a packed crowd at the Scotiabank Convention Centre. “That’s potential I’ve never seen in my investment lifetime.”

O’Leary believes that it will be medicinal cannabis market – particularly the CBD category – that will truly dominate globally. He implored industry insiders to do what they can to reform current cannabis policy in the United States so that institutional capital could one day make its way in.

Despite the fact that the event is held in Canada, there was a lot of attention paid to both the North American and other foreign markets that are beginning to stand out. Eugenio Garcia, Founder and Publisher of CannabisNow Magazine, believes that all eyes are indeed on the Great White North as their market matures.

“The big draw for me to come to the Grow Up was to learn more about how the different licensed producers and brands in Canada are adjusting to the new regulations that are coming and how comfortable they feel with the competition internationally that will end up fulfilling itself for the next year or two,” said Garcia, who spoke on a panel about brand development. “It’s an extremely interesting thing to watch.”

The expo floor energy was electric and the floor was often packed, a sign that excitement is at a fever pitch in a country poised to be at the top of the cannabis food chain.
“It’s been fantastic – we’ve literally never had a moment when we weren’t in conversation,” exclaimed Terry Donnelly, CEO of Hill Street Beverage Co. (TSX:BEER), makers of non-alcoholic beer and wine. The company has plans to introduce cannabis-infused products when edibles hit the market in Canada in 2019. “We’re just thrilled with the reception – we’re running out of samples!”
