General Social Survey Finds Broad Cannabis Support

Many popular survey groups have indicated that the majority of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, but the General Social Survey may be the ultimate sign that public opinion has begun to change in a dramatic way.
The national survey issued every two years is widely considered to be the gold standard for public opinion research. After surveying 1,687 respondents with the question “Do you think the use of marijuana should be made legal or not?”, the organization reported that 52% indicated the drug should be legalized. Some 42% of respondents opposed legalization, while another 7% remained undecided.
In states where marijuana has already been fully legalized, there are many indications that public support continues to increase. A Quinnipiac poll found that 58% of Coloradan voters support the state’s marijuana law, which is slightly more than the 55% of voters that approved the law back in 2012. These dynamics suggest the legalization initiatives have been fairly smooth to date.
Opponents to the legalization of marijuana are facing an increasingly uphill battle to prevent the spread of legislation throughout the U.S. With Alaska, Oregon, and Washington D.C. joining Colorado and Washington State in full legalization, many states are turning toward the courts to try and block these measures. Nebraska and Oklahoma, for instance, recently filed suit against Colorado.
In the end, the will of the voters usually wins out against the competition when it comes to public policy. The growing pains experienced now may end up being solved by a cohesive nationwide policy addressing these concerns.
