Delaware Could Be Ready to Legalize Cannabis in 2016

Policy, Top Story

Delaware might not be putting cannabis up for legalization in November, but recent polls suggest that the movement could see strong support in 2016. According to a recent poll by the University of Delaware, the legalization of adult-use marijuana is supported by 56% of respondents compared to just 39% opposing such measures. The only group opposing legalization were those aged 60 years or older.

The Marijuana Policy Project hopes to pass adult-use cannabis legalization in Delaware within the next five years, along with a number of other states that have demonstrated support for such policies. If approved, these states would join others like Colorado and Washington State that have already legalized adult-use marijuana, as well as others like Oregon and Washington D.C. that could this November.

While medical marijuana has become mainstream throughout the United States, many states remain on the fence regarding adult-use marijuana. The success of Colorado’s efforts have led to some increased confidence on the part of advocates, but there are still many critical issues that remain unresolved and the data regarding adult-use legalization isn’t robust enough to draw conclusions.

For example, operating motor vehicles remains illegal while under the influence of marijuana, but there are no definitive roadside tests. Companies like Cannabix Technologies Inc. [stockquote symbol=BLOZF] (CSE: BLO) are working towards convenient road-side solutions, but the technology could take some time to become commercialized and widely available among law enforcement.

The addition of Washington State and other case studies should help add to the data supporting or shooting down the idea of adult-use cannabis, but most of the indications so far suggest that it’s a net positive for society. Violent crimes have decreased, tax revenue has increased, and the reduction in arrests for non-violent crimes could have a dramatic impact on the prison system long-term.
