How Dangerous is Marijuana, Really?

A new 20-year research study found that smoking marijuana could be extremely detrimental to health. According to the report, one-in-six teenagers who smoke cannabis will become dependent on it. It doubles their risk of developing psychotic disorders and can disrupt normal intellectual development if used regularly. Long-term use could also increase the risk of getting cancer and other diseases.

Like most studies, it’s important to read between the lines to ascertain just how relevant the study is, particularly given the fact that it’s a review study.

The ability to overdose on cannabis has become a significant point of contention within the research community. According to the research study, the fatal dose of THC appears to be between 15 and 70 grams, although it’s important to note that the average joint contains just 0.06 grams of THC. Cannabis smokers would have to consume between 238 and 1,113 joints per day before overdosing.

The addictiveness of marijuana is another big point of contention within the research community. According to the research study, the adverse health and social consequences of cannabis use reported by cannabis users who seek treatment for dependence appear to be less severe than those reported by alcohol and opioid-dependent people, suggesting that marijuana is less addictive than other drugs.

Many of the other negative side effects of cannabis suffer from potential confusion between correlation and causation. For instance, cannabis may be correlated with depression and suicide, but it’s uncertain as to whether cannabis causes depression and suicide or depressed individuals simply use cannabis more frequently. These types of concerns mean broad studies like these should be taken with a grain of salt.
