Coloradans Still Support Legalized Cannabis (but Not for Politicians)

The majority of Coloradans believe that legalizing cannabis has been good for the state, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. The survey found that 52% of respondents have a favorable opinion of legalized cannabis, but the majority of Republicans and elderly held the opposite opinion. With legalization moving into its fourth month, these figures are promising for nationwide advocates.

“Colorado voters are generally good to go on grass, across the spectrum, from personal freedom to its taxpayer benefits to its positive impact on the criminal justice system,” said Tim Malloy, Assistant Director of the Quinnipiac University poll. “But if you are a politician, think twice before smokin’ them if you got ‘em.”

The majority of voters support the law legalizing cannabis. While 49% said they’ve tried marijuana in the past, only 15% admit using the drug since it was legalized on January 1, 2014. The majority believes that legalized cannabis will save taxpayers money and have a positive impact on the criminal justice system. A further 54% indicated that driving has not become more dangerous as a result.

Interestingly, the same survey found that 52% of respondents were less likely to vote for a candidate in office who smokes cannabis two or three days per week. In fact, only 3% were more likely to vote for a cannabis-smoking candidate, while the remaining 43% said that the issue would not affect their vote. It seems that cannabis advocates are at least willing to admit that the drug could have an adverse effect.

In addition, 38% of respondents indicated that they were “very concerned” or “somewhat concerned” that a friend or family member has been over-using marijuana. These concerns have been highlighted by two recent deaths that involved the use of high-THC drugs, including a husband who shot his wife dead and a college student who jumped to his death.

In the end, cannabis legalization remains widely supported, but there are a few concerns remaining on voters’ minds.
