The cannabis industry has experienced significant growth over the past decade thanks to shifting consumer sentiments, legislative victories, and a growing corporate sector. At the same time, governments have struggled to keep up with regulations to protect consumers—including the safety of those that aren’t consuming any cannabis.

In the 1960s, alcohol breathalyzers became widely available to law enforcement and employers. The technology measures alcohol content by creating a chemical reaction that oxidizes the alcohol in a breath sample and produces an electrical current. And the current determines the subject’s blood alcohol content or BAC.

Cannabix Technologies Inc. (CSE: BLO, OTC: BLOZF) is developing its own breathalyzer technologies to detect tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant— in breath, to identify impaired drivers or employees that present a risk to others.

Unique Challenges for Cannabis

Fuel cell breathalyzers are ideal for roadside testing as they provide accurate readings for alcohol and are portable. Fuel cell technology is relatively simple – case in point, you can now find BAC analyzers for your keychain.  In order to accurately determine the presence of THC, law enforcement and toxicologists make use of mass spectrometry units that are large, tabletop devices typically found in a lab setting.

THC that appears in breath is typically measured in picograms (trillionths of a gram), meaning that a cannabis breathalyzer must be extremely sensitive. Cannabix leverages high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) to detect these small concentrations in an accurate and selective manner.

Another challenge is establishing guidelines. While zero-tolerance policies are straightforward, many states have set legal limits for THC (per se limits), such as five ng/mL in Washington or one ng/mL in Pennsylvania. Unlike alcohol, there’s no real consensus about what level of THC translates to impairments on the road or the job. With this being the case, the goal is to create a portable drug screening device that can help aid law enforcement and others to help detect THC within a time period that aligns with peak impairment (a short period of 1-3 hours after cannabis use).

Building Value with Patents

Cannabix Technologies has been actively building its intellectual property portfolio over the past few years to cover innovations related to detecting THC in breath samples.

Most recently, the company announced that the U.S. PTO granted Patent No. 17/019728, entitled, “Apparatus and Methods for Detection of Molecules”. The patent is focused on the use of FAIMS innovations in detecting THC in breath samples. These developments provide utility in several areas related to the detection of target molecules in breath.

In addition to this patent, the company secured Patent No. 14/689434, entitled “Cannabis Drug Detection Device,” which was also issued by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). These patents provide the company with a broad foundation to build upon as they work to bring this technology to market.

Looking Ahead

Cannabix Technologies Inc. (CSE: BLO, OTC: BLOZF) is working hard to provide a reliable, fair and effective testing solution, Cannabix hopes to give law enforcement and employers the tools they currently lack to accurately determine recent marijuana use at the point of care. Combined with continued public education, such a tool could clear up a lot of the grey areas currently surrounding the issue of driving under the influence of legal cannabis and help keep our roads safer. Furthermore, technology that Cannabix is developing could ultimately make it easier for lawmakers everywhere to move forward with some form of marijuana legalization.
