Cannabidiol (CBD) May Be Useful in Treating Social Anxiety Disorder

Brazilian researchers believe that cannabidiol (“CBD”) – the non-psychoactive component of cannabis – could be beneficial in treating Social Anxiety Disorder (“SAD”). After gathering ten SAD patients, the researchers used neuroimaging to measure blood flow to various parts of the brain before and after CBD consumption, finding that CBD reduced anxiety with effects on the limbic and paralimbic areas.
Animal and human studies indicate that CBD has anxiolytic properties, but no study has investigated the effects on human pathological anxiety and its underlying brain mechanisms, according to the study. Interestingly, CBD appears to counteract the opposite effects that tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”) has on the brain. Large doses of THC have been tied to bouts of paranoia and anxiety.
Social Anxiety Disorder is one of the most common anxiety disorders, affecting 12% of U.S. citizens at some point during their life. The condition is characterized by intense fear in one or more social situations, causing considerable distressed and an impaired ability to function in at least some parts of daily life. The fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from other individuals.
Despite the potential health benefits of CBD, cannabis remains a Schedule I Controlled Substance under U.S. federal law. These laws characterize the drug as a highly addictive substance along the same lines of heroin or cocaine. While some states have legalized the use of CBDs on a state level, the federal government has made little progress in creating a nationwide policy thus far.
