Alberta Poll Shows Broad Support for Legalized Cannabis

Canada’s Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (“MMPR”) program has generated significant interest among both patients and investors, but the movement to legalize recreational marijuana could push the industry to even greater heights. While the country has been ramping up its anti-marijuana efforts, support for legalization among Canadians seems to be picking up steam.
In a recent Insights West poll, 52% of Albertans supported the legalization of marijuana, while only 42% said that they would oppose such a measure. Support for legalization was highest among men (61%) and residents aged 35 to 54 (57%) and lowest among women (45%) and residents aged 55 and over (47%). The support also comes despite the fact that only half of participants reported trying marijuana.
The Conservative Party has continued to attack Justin Trudeau’s stance on cannabis, while Health Canada has ramped up its anti-marijuana advertising campaign. Trudeau responded by accusing the government of fear mongering with its attacks on his legalization policy. In particular, he pointed to the fact that Canada houses the largest population of teen users despite prohibition efforts to date.
In the end, poll results continue to suggest support for legalization among citizens, which suggests that long-term changes to policy are inevitable. Politicians supporting the legalization of marijuana could eventually push reforms through the government given the improving public support, which could set the stage for greater long-term opportunities for investors in the space.
