Most people are familiar with cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) but they’re just two of more than 60 cannabinoids in the hemp plant.

Cannabichromene, or CBC, is another major cannabinoid found in the hemp plant that has caught the attention of scientists and consumers. Unlike other cannabinoids, CBC reduced pain and inflammation using a mechanism of action other than CB1 and CB2 receptors. CBC doesn’t produce a ‘high’ like THC, but it appears to work synergistically with THC when taken together.

While CBC remains relatively unknown, many companies are working on developing CBC-dominant hemp extracts. CBC oil would enable consumers to increase or decrease the amount of CBC that they take each day depending on their body’s response to it. Topicals and other product formats could also open the door to different options down the road.

What is CBC Oil Good For?

Researchers are just starting to understand how CBC interacts with other cannabinoids to produce different effects ex-vivo (e.g., in test tubes) and in animal studies. More research is needed before CBC can be recommended as a treatment for any medical conditions, but the research thus far shows several promising therapeutic effects.

Current research points to several potential benefits:

  • Inflammation: Several studies have shown that CBC has anti-inflammatory properties. Rather than acting on CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBC appears to act on TRPV1 and TRPA1 receptors that are primarily found in nerve cells. Researchers believe that CBC has a desensitizing effect on these receptors, which causes them to reduce their output of inflammation-producing chemicals.
  • Mental Health: Some research suggests that CBC may improve mood and decrease sluggishness in animal models of depression. These effects are similar to the effects seen in cannabinol (CBN) and cannabigerol (CBG).
  • Nervous System: Researchers believe that CBC may help the body regenerate nerve cells, known as neural stem progenitor cells (NSPCs), which are essential for repairing damaged nerve cells and maintaining a healthy brain.
  • Skin Health: Early research suggests that CBC could help reduce skin inflammation. In particular, researchers studied the effects of CBC in skincare for those affected by elevated sebum production and inflammation of the sebaceous glands.
How to Use CBC Oil

Given the early-stage nature of the research, it’s important to keep in mind that these benefits may not translate from test tubes and animals into humans. Consumers should also be aware that CBC could have unknown side-effects that didn’t appear in early studies.

CBC appears to be similar to many other cannabinoids, such as CBD, and will likely have similar usage options. For example, CBC oil may be available in capsule form as a dietary supplement or in a bottle for sublingual drops as required. That said, the bioavailability of CBC oil taken sublingually may be superior since it avoids second-pass metabolism in the liver, possibly making it more effective in delivering the active ingredient.

Where to Find CBC Oil

CBC remains relatively unknown among cannabinoids and isn’t widely available as pure CBC oil, but it can be found as a component of full-spectrum hemp oil. That said, there are a few companies that offer full-spectrum CBC oil products.

Some products include:

  • NuLeaf Full Spectrum CBC Oil
  • 3Chi CBC Oil Tincture
  • Formula Swiss CBC Oils

Note: CFN Media has not evaluated the safety, efficacy or purity of these products nor are we making any recommendations to buy or use them.

The Bottom Line

CBC oil is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but it may offer some unique properties compared to its more popular cousins, CBD or THC. While the research remains early-stage, consumers may want to explore these potential benefits on their own when making a decision about the wellness products that are right for them.
