Why Leafs by Snoop Could Face Some Big Competition

CFN-11112015-1Rappers have been widely known to capitalize on their fame to promoting products, ranging from the wildly successful Beats by Dre to the ill-fated Memphis Bleek shampoo back in 2008. With the legalization of marijuana across an increasing number of U.S. states, Snoop Dogg announced the launch of Leafs by Snoop – a brand encompassing a range of cannabis flowers, edibles, and concentrates that are endorsed by the iconic American rapper.

The products will initially be sold exclusively at LivWell – a licensed Colorado cannabis shop – before expanding to other shops by the end of the month. According to the Cannabist, the products are also being manufactured by a license belonging to Beyond Broadway (which does business as LivWell). The rapper isn’t permitted to technically own the brand, because he’s not a Colorado resident, which is a requirement under the state’s law.

Snoop Dogg’s long-time love of marijuana isn’t a secret, with tracks titled Smoke Weed Everyday, Smoke the Weed, and This Weed Iz Mine, but he’s certainly not the only music artist that’s associated with the drug.

Willie’s Reserve

Willie Nelson launched Willie’s Reserve earlier this year, which will be grown, distributed, and sold by local businesses in Colorado and Washington. As an outspoken supporter or cannabis for personal use and industrial hemp production, he has taken a decidedly less “corporate” approach to developing his brand with the goal of working with environmentally-sustainable companies and sending some of the proceeds to policy work.

The company has enlisted some investors at its early stage, including Tuatara Capital and MJIC Inc., but the ties to corporate practices end there for the music artist. After touring across the country and sampling weed from a vast array of local growers, he has developed a unique taste for the drug and wants to keep Big Pot from taking over and eliminating the variety and quality seen in the strains that are available these days.

Marley Natural

Bob Marley’s family launched the world’s first marijuana brand back in late-2014, called Marley Natural in conjunction with Privateer Holdings, a multi-million dollar fund that owns a variety of interest in the marijuana sector. Rather than focusing on the drug itself, the company plans to offer a wide array of products, including cannabis-infused lotions, creams, and various accessories that could set it apart from many competitors.

The company plans to official launch its products in late-2015 in certain states where regulations permit. Initially, the products will include heirloom Jamaican cannabis strains inspired by those that the late Bob Marley enjoyed before dieing from cancer in 1981. The music artist has become iconic among marijuana advocates, having embraced cannabis as a key part of his Rastafarian faith and supported its legalization.

Crowded Field

The cannabis industry is quickly becoming a crowded field, with a number of brands looking to establish their presence. While Leafs by Snoop is the latest addition to the mix, Willie’s Reserve and Marley Natural are two other popular brands that have launched in the space. All of these brands will also have to compete with Big Pot and smaller competitors that are endorsed by other famous personalities.
