When it comes to marijuana, the High Times Cannabis Cup is one of the penultimate events of the year. The Cannabis Cup began in 1988 in Amsterdam, but now occurs in several regions across North America as well. The event brings the best and the brightest cannabis cultivators and entrepreneurs together to network, learn, and most importantly, compete. Categories included in the competition include flower, concentrates, edibles, vape pens, topicals, and more, which judges sample in order to determine who will win the top prizes. Add in celebrity appearances, musical performances, and tons of cool exhibits, and you have the biggest cannabis event of the year. Whether you want to compete, judge, or just visit, read on to find out how to get in on the action!

How to Compete

For growers and manufacturers interested entering a Cannabis Cup, there are a few things to know. First of all, out-of-state competitors are not allowed to enter any US competitions; each entrant must be licensed in the state where the contest is occurring. Also, all cannabis products must be unadulterated and packaged in a proper way. Individual Cup events have varying rules and judging categories, which should be noted when registering to compete.

Cannabis Cup entries are given qualitative scores by official judges in different areas. For example, flowers and concentrates are judged on aroma, taste, visual aesthetics, stone/high, and burnability/flush. These scores are then combined with quantitative results from lab testing of the cannabis products in order to determine winners in each competition category. While packaging is not looked at for flowers or concentrates, they are considered in the edibles, topicals, and vape pen categories.

Who Are the Judges?

For each category, there are typically between five and nine judges.  High Times selects judges via an online application process, searching for the most passionate and educated individuals in cannabis from all over the world. The application requires a referral from a High Times employee; if you’re not connected with someone at the company, it’s worth reaching out. It should be noted that entries are officially judged before the actual event begins and therefore any applicants should plan accordingly.

Tips for Attendees

The High Times Cannabis Cup is one of the biggest and most popular pot events in the world, with thousands of people visiting each individual Cup. Attendees include everyone from the average consumer to celebrities. Here are some tips for folks looking to visit their first Cannabis Cup:

  • Know the Rules – Each regional Cannabis Cup has its own regulations regarding who may attend and/or who may consume on the premises. Attendees over the age of 21 in states where adult-use is legal may consume on-site. Attendees in medical states over the age of 18 may attend, but only legal patients may consume in a special medicating area. All Cannabis Cup events are BYOB (bring your own bud).
  • Stay Safe – Walking around any large festival can do a number on your body. Wear comfortable shoes and be sure to hydrate. Also, tread lightly when it comes to recreational consumption. For novice cannabis users, it’s vital to understand that strength and recommended dosage of products can vary greatly and to keep this in consideration before imbibing.
  • Educate Yourself – The Cannabis Cup offers a wide variety of seminars and speakers, letting attendees learn about everything from growing to terpenes to policy. There are also several non-profits dedicated to cannabis legalization present at every event. Take time to explore all of the amazing resources at hand and consider getting involved!
  • Read the Schedule – As each Cup gets bigger and bigger every year, it can be nearly impossible to catch everything. Grab an event program as soon as you arrive and make a list of vendors or exhibits you want to see. Musical performances are always top-notch and draw large crowds, so consider taking a look at the line-up beforehand. Who knows – Snoop Dogg may make a surprise stop!
  • Have Fun – The High Times Cannabis Cup is about celebrating all things weed. Immerse yourself in the environment; make friends, trade stories, and learn a little more about the many ways that cannabis is benefiting our society as a whole.

Final Thought

The High Times Cannabis Cup has been setting the standard for marijuana events and tradeshows since the first competition was held in Amsterdam nearly 30 years ago. With cannabis legalization reaching a fever pitch in the United States, it’s almost certain that there will be more Cups popping up all over the country within the next few years. Whether you want to compete, judge, exhibit, or visit, the Cannabis Cup offers an experience unlike any other and is a must for pot enthusiasts of all types.
