As marijuana’s legalization begins to expand nationwide—both medically and recreationally—it’s no overstatement to say that the revenue its generating is booming.

In fact, analysis by the Tax Foundation found that nationwide legalization could generate up to $28 billion in tax revenues for federal, state, and local governments.

Vast economic growth is happening wherever marijuana legalization is found, but those states where it’s legal for recreational use are seeing the most benefit.

Revenue generation by the state

Washington state is expected to bring in $154.6 million in taxes from the industry with Bloomberg predicting that in just four years it’ll reach $1 billion.

Oregon projected the marijuana market to be worth nearly $300 million, due largely to its 25% tax on recreational sales, which can bring in approximately $14 million per month.

Recreational use in California has only recently been in play, but given that in 2015 medical dispensaries in the state sold $2.7 billion worth of marijuana-related products, it’s a safe bet that those numbers will grow exponentially with the recent legalization of recreational use.

Washington D.C. numbers are still unclear as retailers were initially blocked from opening up shop by the government despite the legalization of private recreational use. But accessibility is expected to expand over time, and if the booming growth in other states is any indication, D.C. is likely to see great economic benefit as well.

Given the current economic growth of the industry and positive projections for the future, it’s a great time to seriously consider a cannabis career.

What are some potential jobs in the marijuana industry?

Marijuana jobs are more diverse than you might think. Everything from “budtenders” to accountants to software developers are needed to support the expansion, so no matter your education, skills and interests, chances are there’s a marijuana job well-aligned with what you’re after. That said, below are just a few of the potential options.

Budtenders

“Budtenders” are pretty much exactly as they sound—they’re service industry workers who serve marijuana to patrons in much the same way bartenders serve alcohol. They’re knowledgeable about different strains and their effects, and can give sound advice to customers about the best fit for what they’re looking for.

Administration

Have experience as an accountant, secretary, or marketing specialist? Then you’re well-versed for a cannabis career. From checking in customers to managing large accounts, professionals are needed across a wide variety of administrative roles to support the efficient running of the business aspect of the industry.

Shop owner

If yours is an entrepreneurial spirit, now is the perfect time to set up shop. As the marijuana industry begins to become more and more accessible, there will be ample opportunity to have your own cannabis shop. And there’s no better time to do it than in the very beginning, before the market becomes supersaturated.

Farmer

Due to its roots in Mother Nature, the expansion of the marijuana industry is also calling for an expansion of marijuana farmers. Farmers who specialize in the plant and know how to cultivate it with the right temperature, space, pest control and the like have a promising cannabis career ahead of them.

Consulting

Marijuana is an industry like any other, and like any other industry, it has the need for consultants. From the first stages of launching a business to opening up a retail shop to fostering marketing efforts, consultants are needed to help businesses brand and expand into the future.

Web and Software Developers

These days, nearly every business lives online, so it’s no surprise that there’s a growing demand for web experts and software developers in the cannabis industry. New software will be essential to helping run businesses smoothly with accounting programs and product management, and web developers are needed to keep online interfaces user-friendly and intuitive.
