Organized Labor Target the Pot Industry

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which represents many food workers at companies like Safeway, has been looking to bring organized labor to California’s marijuana industry since 2010. While only about 1,000 workers have signed statewide, the organization has been playing a big role in laying the foundation for recreational marijuana legalization in a vote to improve the figure.

The organization hasn’t brought an official ballot to the table, but they would likely support measures that create real workforce regulations and job training. Rather than focusing on the amount of revenue generated, the organization is focused on the number of people working within the industry, and considerations related to how those workers’ rights are protected as the industry matures.

In San Francisco, three of the city’s 27 dispensaries have already hired organized workers. Those numbers could significantly expand if marijuana is legalized on a higher level and larger companies get involved in the industry. For instance, it’s unclear how the seasonal migratory workforce that services the current industry will respond to the influx of fulltime workers that could replace them.

A lot depends on what ballot measures eventually end up being successful. Right now, it looks like a coalition between the Drug Policy Alliance, Reform California, and other groups that have worked on similar measures in Colorado and Washington State will be leading the charge. However, these groups are still gathering data ahead of submitting the proposed legalization language.

In the end, organized labor hopes to play a role in the industry in order to protect workers’ rights, just as it has in many other food-related businesses.
