NFL May Be Changing Its Tune on Medical Marijuana

Ravens Offensive Tackle Eugene Monroe has been pushing for the National Football League (NFL) to consider medical marijuana as a serious treatment for years. While the sports franchise has publicly avoided these conversations, the Washington Post reported that two prominent members of the NFL’s medical personnel discussed medicinal uses of cannabis with researchers from Johns Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania on June 2.
Mr. Monroe donated $80,000 to these researchers studying the potential benefits of medical marijuana. While medical marijuana is only legalized in 25 states, he hopes that players in those states would be able to benefit from treatment options. Another 15 states have legalized limited use of non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) extracts, which may also have certain benefits for players suffering from concussions and CTE.
In many ways, Mr. Monroe is putting his career on the line in the hope of helping fellow players and breaking down the stigmas associated with the drug. A large organization like the NFL acknowledging the benefits of medical marijuana could go a long way in normalizing the drug outside of the sports world and in the eyes of many doctors. The NFL’s initial meetings could be a big first step in making this dream a reality.
