New Poll Shows Majority Support for Legalization

A new poll from Pew Research Center found that 53% of American support legalization, which is slightly lower than the 54% support seen last year.
Not surprisingly, millennial voters appear to be the most supportive of marijuana legalization, with 68% of those between 18 and 34 supporting such measures – a full 16 points higher than the next most supportive demographic.
Democratic voters were also supportive of legalization, with a full 75% of them identifying as liberals supporting such measures. By comparison, only 48% of Republicans identifying as moderate or left leaning supported legalization. In general, 59% of Democrats and 58% of Independents support legalization, while only 39% of Republicans are in favor – although that’s the highest number level of support from the party since Pew started the poll in 1969.
On a positive note for advocates, voters are much more likely to move from opposing legalization to supporting it, according to the research. The poll found that 30% of Americans surveyed had “always felt that way” and 35% have “always opposed legalization”. However, 21% indicated that they changed their minds in favor of legalization, while 7% changed their minds against legalization.
The Pew survey mirrors the results of several other surveys conducted evaluating the support for marijuana legalization, including various Quinnipiac surveys.
So far, 23 states have legalized medical marijuana and four states have legalized recreational marijuana along with Washington D.C. However, the federal government continues to classify the drug as a Schedule I Controlled Substance.
