Ex-Police Chief to Lead UK Legalization Efforts

Tom Lloyd, a former chief constable of the Cambridgeshire police, will head a new cannabis law reform group called the National Cannabis Coalition, encompassing NORML UK, the UK Cannabis Social Clubs, and the United Patients Alliance, according to The Guardian.

The alliance is calling for legal access to marijuana for adult recreational and medicinal use by anyone who needs it. By transitioning from grassroots protests to political campaigning, the group aims to target decision makers in UK drug policy with an air of credibility afforded to it by having a former police chief lead the effort. The goal is to bring strong anecdotal and statistical evidence to the table in order to make a credible and strong argument.

Next month, MPs will debate cannabis legalization in Westminster after more than 200,000 people signed a parliamentary petition calling for reform. Countries like the United States and Uruguay have already began paving the way toward cannabis reform, although the government seems dead set against changing the law. After all, it’s difficult to change the narrative surrounding cannabis, which has been popularized for decades.

Some organizations have chosen not to join the new alliance, including Britain’s largest membership-based cannabis reform group, known as Clear. According to NCC members, Clear doesn’t like the epithet “stoners” and will criticize people for looking a certain way, which has separated them from the mainstream. However, Clear says that it never received an invitation to join and added that they would not sign up at this stage.

In the end, the group doesn’t see a revolution, but rather slow progress toward the ultimate goal of liberalizing cannabis laws.
