Colorado Embarks on Largest State-Funded MMJ Research Effort

The Colorado Department of Health will dole out approximately $9 million in grants over the next five years to study the effects of medical marijuana under a new bill signed by Governor John Hickenlooper. The research includes clinical trials on marijuana products in use in Colorado, which differs from the substances that are commonly studied using federal funds in the past.

Federally funded studies require the use of federally grown medical marijuana, which possesses very different attributes than the medical marijuana that’s legal in states like Colorado. For instance, the THC-to-CBD concentrations in Colorado MMJ can be fine-tuned depending on the condition, rather than using a standard crop that might be higher in psychoactive THC and lower in efficacious CBD.

Several studies have shown the medical marijuana can help improve pain, tremors, nausea, inflammation, and a number of other conditions, but concerns remain that the drug can inhibit brain development and lead to addiction. Physicians are caught in the crossfire with many critics claiming that they are issuing prescriptions based on limited amounts of data relative to FDA-approved drugs.

Clinical trials could solve some of these issues by providing more detailed safety and efficacy data to support physician decision-making. Studies in California have already found that smoked marijuana can relieve pain at certain doses, vaporized marijuana was safer for the lungs, and medical marijuana patients with MS experienced less spasticity, among other findings.

The $9 million in state funding will come from registration fees paid by medical marijuana patients and could be used to finance between 10 and 15 studies. The Department of Health expects begin accepting applications during the second half of 2014 and providing funding in early 2015. With the federal government falling behind, these types of state programs could help pick up the slack.
