Everyday, exciting new developments are made in cannabinoid research. NanoSphere Health Sciences Inc., a global leader in nanoparticle delivery, is setting the bar high. The Colorado-based company recently announced the introduction of a CBD-variety of their popular Evolve Serum, and has also partnered with Vertical Companies in order to expand operations into California and Arizona – with more to come.

CFN Media caught up with NanoSphere Health Sciences Inc. President & COO David Sutton at the recent MJBizNEXT Conference in New Orleans, who spoke about the biotech firm’s evolution and their upcoming nasal spray product line.

CFN:  You were recently awarded a patent on your technology, what does this mean to you as a company?

David Sutton:  It’s probably the biggest achievement our company has achieved to date. It’s something that we’ve been working on for five years and really solidifies what we’ve been working on, this helps us create a unique position in the marketplace that’s protectable. The patent relates specifically to the NanoSphere delivery system. The manner and method in which we nanoencapsulate material, using a variety of manufacturing techniques. It’s actually a fairly broad patent, and we’re very very pleased with that. Beyond that, we anticipate getting another patent on the formulation using our delivery system specifically in regards to cannabis.

CFN:   David, tell us about your recent partnership with Vertical?

DS:  We are thrilled to be partnering with VertCo. I just visited their manufacturing facility in Needles, California and within a year they’re going to have almost a quarter million square feet of grow, with a capacity to reach a million square feet in 18 months, and it’s all there.

The team is amazing and have operations in other states, which we really like because when you’re dealing with IP, it’s better to deal with fewer people. We’re really walking hand-in-hand as we enter these new states with some great partners.

CFN:  There’s a lot of buzz about the intranasal spray debuting later this summer. How was it developed?

DS:  We initially formulated the product to have a big impact on budtenders. Budtenders tend to be daily consumers of cannabis, and as such have developed a pretty high tolerance. We wanted something to demonstrate how impactful our technology is, and how beneficial it is to the industry. The only way to do that is to get budtenders really high! That’s what this does. A  single 10mg dose pumped up the nose hits them within 80 seconds and lasts for about three to four hours. It’s a euphoric feeling; it’s not like smoking or eating. It has a variety of actions as it goes through the course of its duration. It’s a lot of fun. The budtenders were very impressed by it.

When the product first hits the market, we’re expecting three strengths: 2.5mg, a 5mg, and a 10mg version, available both on the recreational and medicinal market. We’re anticipating we’ll be able to offer different effects and strengths down the road.

CFN:  What other markets are you preparing to enter?

DS:  We are very excited to be in talks to enter Nevada, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. We are also interested in North Dakota. It’s a small market now, but we think that there could be a lot of potential with oil field workers. it’s a hidden gem. We’re also applying for our own license in Michigan, another undervalued market. There’s 300,000 patients there, and no one ever talks about it!
