The legalization of recreational and medical marijuana has taken the United States and Canada by storm. While marijuana remains a Schedule I Controlled Substance on a federal level, the drug has been legalized for recreational use in five states and several others are set to vote in the U.S.’ November election to potentially follow suit. Many experts agree that California’s legalization measure, if approved, could be the tipping point needed for the federal government to take action.

The legalization of marijuana is widely seen as a net benefit to society, since it reduces incarceration rates, increases tax revenue, and helps fight organized crime. Of course, driving under the influence of marijuana remains a major concern for law enforcement. Unlike alcohol, there’s no easy test for THC – the psychoactive component of marijuana – that can be given roadside and those suspected must go through invasive blood testing.

In this article, we will take a look at Cannabix Technologies Inc. (OTC Pink: BLOZF, CSE: BLO) and its innovative marijuana breathalyzer that recently took a step closer to commercialization.

Closer to Reality

Cannabix Technologies’ marijuana breathalyzer leverages mass spectrometry to detect the presence of THC in breath samples. Of course, mass spec machines are not exactly known for their small size, since they must ionize samples and sort the ions based on their mass to charge ratio in order to identify components of the sample. The company has been diligently working to reduce the size of its mass spec technology to a roadside-friendly level.

The company is developing its mass spec technology in conjunction with the Yost Research Group – a global leader in high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry or FAIMS. According to Dr. Richard A. Yost, who heads up the Yost Research Group and teaches at the University of Florida, “FAIMS is a highly selective atmospheric-pressure separation technique that has the potential to provide a portable, field capability for the detection of THC.”

On July 25, the company announced the development of its beta version of the Cannabix Marijuana Breathalyzer. Cannabix has made significant inroads in recent months in reducing the overall size of its device. In particular, the FAIMS cell employed in the device is four times smaller than the prior benchtop version and has a 10x reduction in power supply requirements while maintaining the same THC sensitivity. This represents a key step forward in developing a mobile-friendly version of the breathalyzer that can be used for roadside testing.

Growing Market

The market for drug and alcohol testing is expected to grow at a 9.5% compound annual growth rate to reach $6.3 billion by 2019, according to Markets and Markets. Within the industry the analyst expects the breath sample segment to grow at the fastest CAGR, as it is the most common test performed for driving under the influence (DUI) cases. The market is dominated by North America and Europe, although the Asia-Pacific market is likely to see the fastest growth.

The greatest demand for marijuana breathalyzers will likely come from law enforcement, where there are few options to easily detect high drivers. But, another significant customer base may be employers who, for example, may want to screen heavy equipment operators. These groups must currently randomly screen individuals using more invasive urine or blood testing, which means that the tests cannot be performed very frequently.

Cannabix Technologies considers itself a first mover in the development of a marijuana breathalyzer, with its well-qualified founder – a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer – and its exclusive worldwide license to the University of Florida’s Patent 8,237,118 in the area of breath analysis of controlled substances, as well as its relationship with Dr. Yost.

Looking Ahead

Cannabix Technologies has made tremendous progress in bringing its marijuana breathalyzer closer to commercialization. With a tremendous market opportunity in its crosshairs, investors may want to keep a closer eye on a leader in the race to develop a functional breathalyzer for law enforcement, employers, and other end markets.
