The amount of cannabis strains on the market today is dizzying. It seems as though every week there is a new hot-ticket item showing up in dispensaries, often selling out as soon as it’s on the shelves. The majority of strains nowadays are hybrids of sativa and indica plants, although finding a strain that has the dominance of one or another is easy. Wondering which strains you should try? Read on for our list of the top seven cannabis strains of 2017 so far.

Caviar Gold

There is nothing on the market quite like Caviar Gold.  The strain is infused with oil all the way down to the stem and then rolled in kief. Aside from Caviar’s insane potency (rapper Tech N9ne gave it a shout-out on his track Some Good), it’s also the only enhanced flower that still breaks up easily and smokes evenly, whether in a joint, blunt, or bowl. Caviar Gold is also committed to community; in 2016, the brand gave 5 percent of gross sales to the American Cancer Society, raising just under $40k for the Road to Recovery program, which provides patients transportation to their doctor appointments. Expect an extremely strong and smooth oil high.

Jack Frost

If you’re a fan of happy, euphoric highs, Jack Frost is for you. Its lineage includes Jack Herer, White Widow, and Northern Lights #5, making it a perfect hybrid for day or night. THC content in Jack Frost has been measured around 22.5%, making it strong but not super overpowering. As the name suggests, buds are covered in a delicious trichome frost. The flavor has been described as sweet and citrusy, much like its parent, Jack.

Rapper Kush

Developed as both a cannabis strain and a lifestyle brand, Rapper Kush has been a favorite on the West Coast since its introduction. A true indica, the flavor is earthy with pine notes. The high hits you right behind the eyes and tends to be fairly long-lasting. Rapper Kush has also been mentioned on several hip-hop tracks, including many by rapper Swisher Sleep. In addition to incredible flower, Rapper Kush also boasts an apparel line and music label.

Bruce Banner #3

Superhero fan or not, Bruce Banner #3 is where it’s at. Named after the alter-ego of the Incredible Hulk, this strain packs a punch that will take you from 0-100 real quick. A cross between OG Kush and Strawberry Diesel, Bruce Banner #3 is the best of both worlds. While three different phenotypes of Bruce Banner have been developed, the third has emerged as the overall favorite. Many fans of the strain love the tantalizing sweet and sour flavor profile.

Presidential OG

Presidential OG is another wonderful indica-dominant strain, offering a smooth and mellow high. The lovechild of Bubble Gum and OG Kush, this strain has a woodsy taste with a hint of citrus and pine. Presidential OG is a true indica, and is often used for its stress-reducing properties. THC content has reached around 23%, making it effective and fast-acting. Much like its cousin, Obama Kush, Presidential OG offers a high amount of cerebral stimulation.

Blissful Wizard

Winner of the 2015 SoCal Cannabis Cup for non-solvent hash, Blissful Wizard is a powerful sativa-dominant hybrid. The sweet and earthy strain is known for its euphoric and happy high. Blissful Wizard was developed by The Captain’s Connection, and is a cross between Captain’s Cookies and Girl Scout Cookies, another extremely popular strain. THC content has been measured around 30%, meaning beginners may want to hold off. Many medical patients find Blissful Wizard to be quite effective in treating nausea and increasing appetite.

Tangerine Sunrise

Sativa fans have been drooling since Tangerine Sunshine was created as a cross between Hawaiian Sunrise crossed with Tangenesia. The flavor is reminiscent of eating a fresh orange right off of the tree. This sativa-dominant strain is extremely uplifting, providing a nice head high that will have users floating happily through the day. Tangerine Sunshine’s haze ancestors shine through, offering next-level taste and THC content.

Final Thought

With advancements in cross-breeding and seed genetics, the amount of cannabis strains on the market is almost too high to count. Whether you like to relax with a nice indica or are looking for an energetic sativa high, there is most definitely something out there for you. Consumers with high tolerance will enjoy the intense high of Caviar Gold, while newcomers may want to stick with mellow Jack Frost. Don’t be afraid to speak with the friendly and knowledgeable staff at your local dispensary; they will gladly help to find the best strain for you.
